TNVLC partners with Durham County Department of Social Service to coordinate 3 mentoring programs. Each program utilizes volunteers who spend 2 hours a week for at least a year providing friendship and guidance to a social services client.
Big Sibs is a mentor program for at-risk children, between the ages of 6 and 16, who are involved with the Department of Social Services. These children are matched with positive role models who spend several hours a week with them for at least one year.
The mission of the Big Sibs program is to foster a system of support for at-risk DSS clients, assisting youth in developing life skills needed for a healthy and productive future. Mentors provide opportunities for personal growth, cultural and social awareness, academic improvement, and educational attainment while developing nurturing one-on-one relationships.
The Friendly Visitor Program matches adult volunteers with elderly or disabled clients of the Department of Social Services. Eligible clients are matched in one-to-one relationships with a dedicated adult volunteer willing to spend at least two hours a week for a minimum of one year with the client.
Friendly Visitors provide clients with meaningful, one-on-one relationships with adult volunteers, helping them to maintain self-sufficiency and independence, while improving their day to day lives by assisting with light household duties and errands. Volunteers also provide exposure to a variety of community activities and assist clients by educating and providing access to needed resources.
The LINKS Program provides services to youth in foster care ages 13 to 18 and to youth who are voluntarily in care between the ages of 18 to 21 (thru a CARS agreement), as well as to young adults who aged out of foster care at age 18. Services can be provided until the age of 21. The Goal of Links is to help these youth and young adults’ transition to Independence and have successful outcomes in education, housing, health and overall well-being.
